Sorry to be a downer, but either Jesus is who He said He was (namely, the Son of God) or He was a lunatic. Can’t have your cake and deny it’s fattening.

This book was so boring and hard to read. I think it would have done better with more real life examples to explain what he means.

He broke everything down to such small parts that I could not see it anymore.

This book speaks against a dogmatic and fundamentalist paradigm. I agree with Borg in his dislike for a fundamentalist distortion of the Christian God as one of rules or political agendas. But he throws the baby out with the bathwater to purport that the heart of Christianity has nothing to do with any of the historically vital tenets of Christianity (Jesus’ resurrection, the Bible, salvation, beliefs, etc.).

If you read this book, you should understand the context and alternative views by reading Jesus Under Fire: Modern Scholarship Reinvents the Historical Jesus.

You could also explore a rational approach to belief rather than Borg’s simple denial of historically Christian beliefs. Try reading Reasonable Faith: Christian Truth and Apologetics or check out Basic Christianity (IVP Classics) or Mere Christianity – UK Gift Edition or Christianity: The Faith that Makes Sense.

In the tradition of 20th Century modernist religion, this book denies the basic beliefs of Christianity by denying the existence of miracles.

I agree with the bible when it says:

“And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith… For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either.

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins…

If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all people.

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead… For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.”

This book tries to make Christianity palatable to skeptics by denying the supernatural claims of the Bible. I think there is more integrity in admitting you’re not a “passionate believer” in Christ if you don’t think he was more than a great moral teacher.
